If you're a business owner, here’s the simplest trick to improve any ad you’ll ever create: run it through the Bar Test.

Now, don’t worry you won’t need to actually head to the local dive bar. But if you did, you’d see firsthand just how effective this simple test can be.

Once you start using this, you’ll quickly see how many ads out there fail miserably.

The Bar Test

It’s pretty simple.

Can you read your ad to someone at the bar and not sound like a complete idiot?

Take this for example:

“At XYZ company, we provide the best customer service with a commitment to excellence.”

Now, imagine you’re at a bar, chatting with a buddy over a beer, and you say that? You’d sound like you’re on another planet, and your buddy would be thinking, “What’s in this drink?”

Not the impression you want to leave.

The Next Ad You See: Put It to the Bar Test

I do this all the time, every ad I see, I put it through the Bar Test. And let me tell you something: most ads fail.

Some are trying to sell 12 things at once. Others firehose you with unnecessary info, like a history lesson on pancakes when all they’re selling is syrup.

And then, the worst offenders don’t even have a clear offer.

If you can’t explain your ad to the guy sitting next to you at the bar—clearly and quickly—it’s garbage. Not winning ad material.

The #1 Conversion Killer

Here’s a golden rule:

Confused people do the worst thing possible… and that’s nothing.

If your ad doesn’t click, if it’s confusing or sounds like it’s trying too hard to sound smart—it’s dead in the water.

Most people will keep writing ads filled with fancy fluff, trying to sound clever. And that’s why most ads fail forever.

Simple Always Wins

The best ads? Simple. Direct. Powerful.

Great communicators have this down—they take complex ideas and break them down into two sentences. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

So, strip the BS away from your ads. Make them so clear, so direct, that even someone halfway through a drink at the bar can get it instantly.

That’s how you go from confusing clutter to a conversion machine. Talk soon, Jake P.S. Want me to check, rewrite, and improve your materials using the BAR test and other principles we’ll be talking about?
